Rabbits!
We introduced a new doe and buck to our rabbitry from Plentiful Harvest's available French Angoras. TomTom and Ebony are gorgeous, sweet and have such soft wool. I am so excited to see them mature and grow here in our home rabbitry! It was a pleasure to talk with Katherine and Danny, and so nice to be able to meet Danny in person. What fun it is to meet others who share similar interests. Thank you, Katherine and Danny, for your amazing encouragement as we press into learning angora rabbits! I am on 'kit watch' this week. Since we've had such a mild winter, I decided to re-breed our does, and it's getting close to time for the girls to kindle. If all went as well as it appeared to have, we will have kits from five mothers by the beginning of next week! Our last try at kits was nearly a miserable failure. There were just enough differences between our Angora's behaviors and what I was used to with Californian does that we managed to lose all but two kits from our first litters. [Our Angoras consume dramatically more hay than our Californians did, therefore one night the girls ate all the hay from the nestboxes, and I woke to find many frozen kits. I also am sad to say that while I was able to save a handful by re-warming them, I didn't realize that I should have given the does a belly trim to make it easier for the kits to nurse. The two surviving rabbits were hand-raised from 2 weeks due to multiple newbie learning curve issues, but I'm happy to say they are gorgeous today! Lessons learned and taken to heart. Who knew rabbit breeds could be so different! [I do-- now!] Welcome to the blog- I'd love to hear who you are and where you're "visiting" from!
